Gov. Eliot Spitzer signed into law yesterday a measure that advocates say will provide much-needed housing dollars for artists in the state.
The measure provides for creation of a pilot program that will give grants to artists for so-called "live-work space" in neighborhoods that they can't afford - a particular boon in New York City due to its high housing costs. The grants will be up to $12,000 to a single artist over a two-year period and up to $20,000 to a group of artists, also over a two-year period.
