Pretty Package

Sometimes I like to send myself little presents in the mail. And yesterday I came home to one of the prettiest of all!

I bought these little birdie earrings

and they came all tied up in a lovely little box with a pretty little bow

Going the extra mile with those little details really brightened my day. Not that it was a dark day or anything, but still. So cute!

Tumblr

I went and started a tumblr blog. Figured it would be easier to keep all the design and product images I drool over there instead of jamming up my google reader and that desktop folder labeled "design images" that I never look at anymore.

If you'd like to see what may or may not ever make it's way into the new apartment, check out In Lieu of a Moodboard...

Hey, Tough Guy!

Bootcamp, Schmootcamp, folks. Until I can run through fire, I'm just a plain old girl.

Boston.com has got photos of the 2010 Tough Guy Challenge, an insane event that takes place in England. I remember seeing photos from last year's TGC, especially the one of this particularly memorable chap.
It looks like there are even ladies competing in the Tough Guy. I am not afraid to say it: these gals are certainly WAY tougher than me. All that mud? No thank you, very much.

The Unhappy Hipsters

Unhappy Hipsters is a hilarious blog that re-captions photos from Dwell Magazine.

We had a subscription to Dwell for a year. If they switched over to this writing style, I'd definitely consider re-subscribing.

Lines Must Be Drawn

Madness.

Sheer Madness.

I'll admit don't love going to a gym (although I have, over time, come to love my gym). I probably wouldn't go if I didn't have to. But. THIS IS RIDICULOUS (just look at the video!).

Eat less. Move more. It's really just that simple. When you're working, work. When you're eating, eat. When you're working out, work out. And then be done with it.

Don't buy the stupid treaddesk.

My First Resolution of 2009

Today's Manhattan User's Guide email featured lists, which I love. All kinds of lists, including Worst Album Covers of 2008, the Ten Worst Employees of 2008 and India's 2008 Best Dressed.

But it was Time Magazine's Top Ten Underreported News Stories of 2008 that really struck a chord with me. How is it that I knew about less than 50% of these stories? Ok, so I don't regularly read up on Sri Lankan Military Strategies, but... this one is particularly terrifying:

In September the FDA released draft guidelines on how to regulate genetically engineered animals for food-production purposes. But critics say the new guidance is weighted too heavily in favor of food companies' bottom lines, without giving adequate consideration to the effect herds of so-called Frankenstein animals — such as fast-growing salmon, pigs chock full of healthy omega-3 fatty acids and goats with protein-laden milk — could have on unmodified species or the ecosystems they inhabit. Another big area of concern is that the guidelines don't call for labeling meat and milk products derived from genetically modified animals. In October, a Consumer Reports survey of more than 1,000 people nationwide found that some 95% of respondents agreed food products made from genetically engineered animals should be labeled as such.

So. In 2009, I will try to be at least as knowledgeable about World News as I am about my friends' Facebook Status Updates.

Why Couldn't I Have Been There on THIS Day?

There is a reason that Sesame Street has been on the air now going on 40 seasons!! They're Just. Plain. Cool.

Purple Drank / Nevermind

Purple drank is a slang term for a recreational drug popular in the hip-hop community of the southern United States. Its main ingredient is prescription-strength cough syrup containing codeine and promethazine.

I believe I have now, officially, seen everything.

via Gothamist

Also along the lines of having seen everything, I heard a little story the other day on NPR. It was about the kid on the cover of Nirvana's Nevermind, an album that my mother and her eardrums probably wish I never bought. You know, the naked baby floating in the pool with the dollar bill in front of him.

His name is Spencer Elden and he's seventeen now. I was slightly younger when filled with the angst to which that album spoke. And he longs for something more

Life in general isn't quite as "cool" as it was when he jumped naked in the pool in the early '90s, though, he says. These days, his peers are too stuck on the Internet and video games. Ironically, he yearns for the era that gave Kurt Cobain, the lead singer for Nirvana, so much angst.

These days, Elden says, his peers concentrate on "playing Rock Band on Xbox, like, that's not a real band! That's the difference between the '90s and kids nowadays; kids in the '90s would actually go out and make a [real] band!"

Wow. Leave it to the Nevermind Baby to drop the logic that makes me feel old. Ok. I think I may need to drown my sorrows in some Tussin & Sprite.

Accept No Imitations!

The BBC reports on a new search engine, Cuil.com. It was created by three former Google employees and they say they rival their former boss in search-able pages alone (they claim they search over 121 Billion pages).

Though I often heartily resist change, I thought I'd check it out. I Cuil-ed myself and determined on my first search that Google has NOTHING to worry about.

First off, the "magazine-style" layout is unfamiliar to me and not as clear and easy to navigate as a search on Google.

Second. Well, look at this clip from my search:
Now the search results are for me, but who is Eff is that blazer-clad woman? Certainly those are not her Promo and Commercial demos linked to that posting! No, that Robin Reed is the General Code's new representative in the State of Michigan, as well as Indiana and Ohio. I have a sneaking suspicion she does not do voiceovers. And, might I add, thank the Internet Overlords for Google, for without it, I would have no idea who this impostor was!

Another blip I don't understand is the "Search by Category" section on the page:

What on earth does "Robin Reed" have to do with Oregon, Beavers and/or Sports? And notice the measley 45,449 search results; Google came back with over 300,000:

Maybe Cuil is still working out some kinks, but I don't see myself switching over any time soon. Google is as much of a household name as BAND-AID, Kleenex or Xerox.

After all, you can't be a chump product and a verb!

Slow start this morning. Will and I had a good laugh at this over breakfast.

Disconcerting

I use Site Meter to track traffic on this blog (yes, I'm watching you. Bwah-hahahahahah hah!).

I found that someone visited my website, probably to the post on the Urbanathlon, from this Google search:

how is mens health going to climb 7 world trade if it fell?

I know this person from Scarsdale NY using Optimum Online's fine internet service probably thinks that World Trade 7 was part of September 11th, but either way, I find this search a little creepy.

Ride the City

I forget where I stumbled upon this genius little site (probably Gothamist), but for anyone using two wheels (and a helmet!) to get around the city, it's a real find.

Ride the City provides Google Maps with biking directions all over the five boroughs, including where there are and are not bike lanes. You can choose directions by safety or speed or by the most direct route.

For example, I'm headed to Williamsburg this morning to meet a friend and have chosen to go by the Most Direct Route (wearing my helmet makes me feel safe enough to shave 10-15 minutes off my trip). Note in the screenshot above it tells me where there are bike lanes and where to use extra caution. It also makes a note of where there is a bikeway or greenway and where, in case of emergency, there is a nearby bike shop.

They may still be working out a few kinks in the site (for some reason, my map jumped to Rhode Island...), but I consider this an invaluable tool for anyone using their bike for business or pleasure.

I Think I Broke Twitter

If you don't know what Twitter is yet, then you probably do things during the day like spending time out doors, reading or generally being away from your computer.

I, on the other hand, can find myself whiling away hours in what seems like mere seconds.

Part of this is due to things like Twitter. If you take a look over there in the left hand column, you'll see my recent "Tweets". These are postings you can put on Twitter-- minute to minute, nay, second to second updates of ANYTHING. In turn, you can read the minutia of those you choose to follow, and your "followers" can keep up to date on what you're doing. Every second of every minute of every hour and so on.

Well, I just went to bestow upon my 12 followers another random thought I had when I got this picture. Cute, but how the hell are those twelve people going to know what I thought of 3.2 minutes ago?! Fix it, Twitter! FIX IT!

So I had to kick it old school and post here on my blog.

What Would You Do To Win?

We started shooting today for a series of marketing videos for Will and Sang's company, Benchcoach.com. Here's a sneak peek at some still footage.

It was a great day with a great bunch of people. Day 2 tomorrow. More photos to come, then, eventually, the videos.

On a More Frivolous Note

Will turned me on to Farecast recently and it's completely fantastic.

It's a travel search. You enter where you're going and when you want to travel and it scans all the airlines for prices.

Yeah, lots of sites do that. But what makes this one extra fancy is that it tells you if you should buy your ticket now or wait based on whether or not they think the price will go up or down. You can sign up for email alerts and they'll send it right to your inbox.

I'm watching fares on a July trip to LA right now. Yesterday, tickets were $395 on United. But I haven't purchased yet-- Farecast says wait.

I Could Get SO Much Done If This Was My Office

Seriously.

Could there be a more perfect place than the Google Offices in Zurich?

I've been thinking what's missing from our home office is clearly the aquarium room with foam cube-filled thinking tub. And chill-out pods, massage room and hammock chairs!

Wow. We're gonna need a bigger apartment if I'm ever gonna get anything done around here!
