In Just 24 Hours...

The Big Picture has captured some great images of preparations in Washington and around the world for the Big Day tomorrow.

I was thinking about watching the inauguration at BAM, but the thought of tons of people lining up in the freezing cold at the crack of dawn, as it is first come, first seated, makes me think that the live stream on CNN.com might be a better idea.

Either way, tomorrow is the day! Finally!

My First Resolution of 2009

Today's Manhattan User's Guide email featured lists, which I love. All kinds of lists, including Worst Album Covers of 2008, the Ten Worst Employees of 2008 and India's 2008 Best Dressed.

But it was Time Magazine's Top Ten Underreported News Stories of 2008 that really struck a chord with me. How is it that I knew about less than 50% of these stories? Ok, so I don't regularly read up on Sri Lankan Military Strategies, but... this one is particularly terrifying:

In September the FDA released draft guidelines on how to regulate genetically engineered animals for food-production purposes. But critics say the new guidance is weighted too heavily in favor of food companies' bottom lines, without giving adequate consideration to the effect herds of so-called Frankenstein animals — such as fast-growing salmon, pigs chock full of healthy omega-3 fatty acids and goats with protein-laden milk — could have on unmodified species or the ecosystems they inhabit. Another big area of concern is that the guidelines don't call for labeling meat and milk products derived from genetically modified animals. In October, a Consumer Reports survey of more than 1,000 people nationwide found that some 95% of respondents agreed food products made from genetically engineered animals should be labeled as such.

So. In 2009, I will try to be at least as knowledgeable about World News as I am about my friends' Facebook Status Updates.

They Really Like Us!

Last night was wonderfully overwhelming, New York City (along with the rest of the world!) was filled with a palpable JOY.

Will and I woke this morning to this email from his cousin Jacopo, titled "Obama elected 44th President of the USA". Jacopo grew up in Florence, Italy and currently lives in Croatia for work.

I really supported Obama. You have no idea how Europeans like him.

Europe has still much to learn from the United States of America. I really think America is still a reference for the rest of the World. You should be proud of being American. I am very proud of being Italian because my Country has a great history and past time. America has a great present and promising future.

It is a terribly exciting time to be an American. We the people made a choice yesterday and I have never before been more proud of my country and my fellow Americans*.

*Seriously. When have I ever used the term "My Fellow Americans"? I'm really excited.

Voting, Brooklyn-Style

I arrived at my polling station this morning at 10am to find this, which seemed like a good sign.

Then inside, I found this:

Also excellent.

But, sadly, those booths weren't for me. Those were the booths of two out of the other three districts voting in the same elementary school gymnasium as mine.

This was my line:

I don't think the photo captures it, but there were no less than 80 people in front of me. I had to get to an audition in Grand Central by noon, so after waiting for 45 minutes to advance a mere few feet, I bailed knowing I'd have more time to wait after my audition.

When I arrived back to the polling station at 12:40, the line had only seemed to get longer. It was torture to keep looking over to the other side to three empty voting booths while 100+ people waited for the SINGLE Kings County 85th District Booth.

All told, I cast my ballot at 2:20pm after an hour and forty minutes of waiting. And I didn't succumb to the goodies at the bake sale (at least not until I was on my way out).

As frustrating as waiting in that line was, I feel good about voting. This is probably the biggest election of my lifetime, and it feels like what I did today was important.

I hope that whomever you're voting for, you've done it already. Or if you're on your way, may you have a shorter line than me.

IMPORTANT VOTING INFO!!!

This is from a friend of mine in the East Village of Manhattan who had trouble in her polling station this morning. She said that when only one voting machine was working, they handed out paper ballots to the long line of waiting voters:

I saw the paper ballots people used being ripped up -- so don't use a paper ballot unless you absolutely can't wait in line anymore. And make sure it's an emergency ballot -- NOT a provisional one.
In the end, she said it took her 95 minutes to cast her vote, after arriving at 6am and the station not opening until 625am.

Be aware. Report anything that smells like fraud. AND VOTE!!!

Don't Not Vote

My friend Dan O'Brien is in this video. He's the guy on the right with the coffee. The election, as I'm sure you well know, is less than a week away. Don't be like Dan. Don't not vote.

And if I can be at all persuasive, Don't NOT vote for Obama. That's a double negative, there, friends. In case it's not clear, I mean VOTE BARACK OBAMA!!

Matt Damon on Absurdity

"I need to know if she really thinks dinosaurs were here 4,000 years ago... I want to know that. I really do. Because she's gonna have the nuclear codes."

Friends and family, if you won't listen to me or any other "crazy liberal" around you, listen to Matt Damon. For the love of God (that's what it is with the über-conservatives, right? The Love of God?), Book Banning! Roe v. Wade! Polar Bears! Think about it.

But look no further than the comments section on YouTube for disapproval -- tgilleece writes:

So Matt Damon thinks Sarah Palin becoming president is a "really scary thing" because HE doesn't know anything about her. So go learn something about her, sissy. Of course he then acknowledges that she was mayor of a "really, really small town" and that she was governor of Alaska for "less than two years" and that's why he's wetting his pants. He's "terrified" that she may have the nuclear codes. I guess he feels much safer with those codes in community organizer Obama's pocket? Absurd indeed.

But "go(ing to) learn something about her" may be difficult, sissy or not:

... now the campaign's playing it safer. She's sticking to a greatest hits version of her convention speech on the campaign trail and steering clear of questions until she's comfortable enough for a hand-picked interviewer later this week.

It Was on the Tip of My Tongue

I have been trying to find the words for this. Heather Armstrong figured it out just ahead of me:

I get the feeling that people around the world are looking at this election as a gauge to see if America is finally ready to wake up and realize that we are not the only country on this planet. They are waiting to see if we are going to put yet another fundamentalist loon in charge of public and foreign policy, someone who doesn't think that global warming is in any way caused by humans, so screw the rest of you who live here on this planet, we need that cup of oil with breakfast in the morning.

To my readers who do not live in America, who are not American, please know that there are so many of us here who are disgusted with what we have let happen in the last eight years and are doing everything we can to ensure that it stops. We are just as scared as you are of those around us who have their fingers in their ears and are going LA LA LA LA LA in an attempt to convince themselves that their behavior and their policies are not in direct violation of the teachings of the God they think put them in power.

Before the RNC started up, I really didn't think I knew a single Republican, save for a few of my friend's dads from other states. I am flabbergasted by how many of my friends, friends that I think highly of, have said that they are "impressed by" and "HUGE fan(s) of" VP Nominee Sarah Palin.

Really.

I just got this in an email, from a friend that I've known almost 20 years:

I'm really sorry but I"m a huge Palin fan. I mean, HUGE. Did you see her speak?

I told her that no, I had not seen Palin's speech at the RNC, but that I did happen to catch this gem. I also told her that I don't for one second believe that she, my dear smart friend, could truly want this woman, fueled by her "devotion to Jesus Christ", a single degree of separation from her getting her finger on the button.

My fingers are in my ears and I'm all "LA LA LA LA LA".

John McCain is Bugging the F**k Out!

"November Fourth. We have to protect our future. Because John McCain is bugging the fuck out."

I never realized how much I enjoy P.Diddy! Especially after receiving this in an email yesterday, from (I think) an uncle from my father's side of the family*:

I believe that if you are selling me a Big Mac, do it in English.

I've never owned a slave, or was a slave, I haven't burned any witches or been persecuted by the Turks and neither have you! So, shut up already.

I believe if you don't like the way things are here, go back to where you came from and change your own country! This is AMERICA .

I can't even begin to write how much I wholeheartedly disagree and dislike the sentiment behind these statements, never mind the statements themselves. All I can say is whoever keeps forwarding these emails to me is BUGGING THE F**K OUT!!!**

*I am an only-child, but I have an incredibly large extended family-- I am the youngest of 49 grandchildren on my father's side. So there's bound to be some-- um... differences in opinion, especially on the topics of race and religion. I don't know that side of my family very well, so to learn about these aspects of them via email forwards is hugely eye-opening and sadly disappointing. I have since asked to be removed from this mailing list.
** Thanks, Diddy.

That Was Fast!

Geez, the man barely has time to get his pants back on and hold a press conference and the moment-to-moment industry that is pop culture kitsch has already got his mug on everything they can think of!

And lest we forget the power and general *zing!* of the quippy headline!

Personally, I don't much follow state politics here-- it's all I can do to keep up with happenings on the national level without throwing my blog reader out the window. I will say, though, that were it not for his rumbling against the "bad guys" as Attorney General, etc. I almost wish that they would leave him alone since this falls as another check in the column marked "Let's All Be Way Too Concerned With What Goes On In Each Other's Bedrooms".

But the lesson we can all walk away from this with is to make sure your closet his sparkling clean before you go poking through someone else's.

Which reminds me. Spring cleaning!

Before Voting in Today's Primary

Please take a few minutes and watch this video, in which Stanford Law Professor Lawrence Lessig explains with clear examples (including a comparison of Clinton's politicking to the style of this guy) why he supports Barack Obama.

Catching up on the Caucuses

Just watching the speeches from the caucuses I slept through last night. Obama is a great speaker-- always gives me some level of goosebump. Exciting to see someone who at the very least changes his tone, unlike Stutter McSpecialEd.

As much as Obama is mesmerizing in his speak, I just don't feel like I'm able to get roused about talk of Hope and Destiny and fighting for the American Dream. Yet. It would be lovely to get to a point where that feels like more than jibber-jabber, but right now this country is not a dreamland.

But then there's Mike Huckabee. Scary, especially with the pearly whites of Chuck Norris beaming out from behind him. Scary, with his hypnotic near-monotone and sad, unfunny jokes. Not quite as scary as Romney. Since when did half of our country become so enchanted by these guys that come off like game show hosts? All I can say is that I had long since moved from Massachusetts by the time Mr. Romney became governor. What? No Kennedys were of age during that election? Eeesh.

Ok, so before I go too far into talking politics (which my days of bartending taught me never to do in mixed company, what with all the fighting that ensues), I'll go start my day.

Piano lessons. Now that's dreamy.

I have not ruled out moving to Europe...

I have not been following the debates, but luckily John Clancy has:
Vote Democrat. Vote for whatever pathetic corporate whore they nominate. I'm an Obama man, of late. If they nominate Hilary, I'll swallow it and vote. If they nominate Edwards, I'll pretend that the corn-pone horseshit doesn't physically cause me to wretch and I'll vote. If it's a write-in and it's Ronald McFuckingDonald on a platform of forced French Fries for all, I will fucking well vote for the clown.

If it's Rudy, we're all deeply, deeply fucked. Look above, we'll live under a Fascist government. It will be extremely well run. Every train will arrive on time. It will always be sunny and quiet. You will never have to see anyone who is not hard-working, tax-paying and scared out of their poor fucking mind. You will live in constant, unrelenting fear. That's how those boys play and they play like a Vegas casino. The house always wins.
I don't like these choices. It's really really scary. I do, however, enjoy Berlin. The trains run on time there, and they already went through their Fascism phase.
